Responsibilities

This position is responsible for all aspects of KUER's news and public affairs programming. This includes managing and directing the activities of independent news and public affairs producers as well as student interns. This position is also responsible for directing the delivery of news through expanded technology platforms including a vibrant web platform. The incumbent also functions as a reporter with on-air responsibilities. Plans, organizes and directs the activities of KUER's newsroom. Directs the news department's involvement in community partnerships. Develops and implements goals and departmental objectives. Coordinates related work issues with other departmental personnel.
Participates in the decision-making process affecting all KUER employees by attending meetings and retreats. Supervises news department staff by hiring, training, evaluating performance, and responding to complaints and grievances. Schedules all on-air news activities, communicates policies, procedures and objectives to news personnel. Communicates to newsroom staff the need for objectivity and balance in all areas of reporting. Monitors departmental expenditures; provides input in the development of the annual budget; participates in long-range planning activities for the station.
Prepares and submits materials for KUER's public files. Devises and maintains archival systems for newscasts and all other in-house produced public affairs programming. Stays current on public radio trends and represents the station to regional and national organizations. Arranges skills development and training opportunities for newsroom staff. Looks for opportunities to "pitch" KUER produced stories to National Public Radio.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism or related field or equivalency and four years of broadcasting experience required. Experience should include public broadcasting news management, familiarity with public radio news and public affairs program offerings and a minimum of three years public radio experience. Must have demonstrated communication and human relations skills.

Work Schedule

This position is a 30 to 40 hour per week benefited position.
Due to the unpredictability of news, this position must be available for weekend work and in certain critical situations, must be available round the clock.
